Movie Review - Second Act (2019)

Second Act stars Jennifer Lopez as Maya Vargas, a newly turned 40 year old who is up for a big promotion at the value grocery store that she has worked at for the last 15 years. She is utterly disappointed when she is overlooked for the position and the company decides to go in a different direction, despite her being the best choice. Things change when Maya gets an interview with a company that seems way out of her league. The CEO of the company (Treat Williams) is very impressed with her and her resume, which has been altered by her best friend's son to help give her a leg up in getting a better job. Once she is offered a position she must go toe to toe with Vice President of the company (Vanessa Hudgens) to see who can make the most cost effective product. There's nothing here that hasn't already been done in hundreds of other romantic comedies. You have a character who gets into a situation caused by a lie and from the moment that happens it's pretty easy to fi...

Movie Review - Then Came You (2019)

Then Came You stars Asa Butterfield (Hugo) as Calvin, a hypochondriac who work as an airport baggage handler with his brother (Tyler Hoechlin) and father (David Koechner). Calvin is a very timid and worrisome person whose whole life changes when he meets Skye (Maisie Williams) at a support group for people diagnosed with cancer. Skye is the complete opposite of Calvin, more outgoing and somewhat of a loose cannon. She enlists Calvin to help her fulfill her bucket list, or as she calls it her "To-Die List" before she passes on. Hesitant at first, Calvin agrees to help her out in hopes that it may bring some light to his down on his luck life. There have been many of films to come out over the years with a lot of similarities to Then Came You. We've all seen the two strangers who meet and bond over a particular event or trait that they both share. Thankfully, everyone involved here does a great job at making this film stand out from the rest of the pack and prides its...

Movie Review - Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

Directed by J.A. Bayona Starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, Daniella Pineda, James Cromwell, Toby Jones, Ted Levine and Jeff Goldblum. Intro When Jurassic World debuted in 2015 it went on to become a bigger hit than most people anticipated. Critics were mostly positive on the film and audiences seemed to enjoy it as well, so a sequel was going to be inevitable. How could they improve on what was a fairly solid and entertaining film that easily stacks as the second best in the Jurassic series? Plot This time around the island that is home to all the dinosaurs we've come to know is about to be destroyed by an active volcano. There is a huge debate on whether or not anything should be done to save these creatures. Majority of people are against saving them, including Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) who stands before congress to say why we shouldn't save them. Once the verdict is in Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) ...

Movie Review - Lady Bird (2017)

Lady Bird tells the story of Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan), a high school rebel who cannot wait to graduate and move as far away from her family as she can. Her mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf) loves her but she can be a little overbearing with her parenting at times and her father (Tracy Letts) usually just stays out of most things because he doesn't like confrontation. The story follows her as she goes from being somewhat of an outcast at her school to two relationships with boys and working her way up to be one of the popular kids. All this while stirring up her own trouble at home with her family. The story here isn't anything you haven't seen before, it's your basic coming of age story. You have a character who is different from the masses but wants to fit in and tries to do so by acting out. Thankfully, director and writer Greta Gerwig knows how to get the right emotions out of the actors involved and puts together a rather telling s...

Movie Review - Pitch Perfect 3 (2017)

When Pitch Perfect came out in 2012 nobody, including myself, was expecting too much from the film based on it's trailers. To our surprise the film ended up being much better than anticipated and went on to be both a critical and box office success. It did so well at the box office that it spawned a sequel in 2015. The sequel wasn't quite as loved as the original but it still struck a chord with most critics and audiences enjoyed it so much it went on to gross more than double what the original was able to bring in. Now we arrive at the third and supposed final film in the franchise, which might be a good thing because this one felt like they were running out of steam. The Barden Bellas are back after winning their world championship in the previous film. They've all gone on to bigger and better things, or at least that's what they all hoped for. After reuniting for a get together the Bellas decide to go on one last singing competition because they know they ar...

Movie Review - November Criminals (2017)

November Criminals follows the story of Addison (Ansel Elgort), a high school senior in Washington, D.C. who just recently lost his mother and is preparing for life after graduating. He has recently started going out with Phoebe (Chloe Grace Moretz) and they are starting to build a good relationship together. Things change when Addison gets word that a friend of his was murdered just hours after having an interaction with him. The media and police claim that the murder happened because of gang involvement but Addison doesn't believe it. With the help of Phoebe he starts his own investigation into the death of his friend to find the truth. The story here has a lot of great ideas but as it progresses it feels as if the execution just isn't there. It felt like the story could have gone the route of racism or how the media constantly jumps to early conclusions, instead the filmmakers decide to play it safe. At times it feels like the main story takes a back seat to the rel...

Movie Review - To The Bone (2017)

Anorexia is a serious disease that effects many people everyday, especially teenagers. To The Bone follows Ellen (Lily Collins), a young girl who has struggled with anorexia for quite some time. She's tried multiple things to try and get past it but can't seem to find a way to fix her disease. Her step mother Susan (Carrie Preston) sets up a session with Dr. William Beckham (Keanu Reeves) because the word of mouth is that he's the best person to put her on the right track. Dr. Beckham has her stay at a home with several others who are struggling with the same disease. As Ellen continues to struggle with her disease Dr. Beckham challenges her and tries to get her to embrace life rather than continue to struggle. To The Bone is the latest Netflix original film and it is safe to say that they have hit a nice stride when it comes to their originals. While the subject matter does make things a bit depressing at times there is a lot to like here. Seeing these people struggle ...
